Cuajimoloyas – Sierra Norte, Oaxaca
San Antonio Cuajimoloyas in the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca is a picturesque village that makes up part of a conglomerate of villages known as the Pueblos Mancomunados (Jointly Responsible Villages) who are working to assure sustainable logging and supplement their income by providing ecotourism facilities. For anybody who has visited Oaxaca’s Sierra Norte already this is brilliant news, because it would be a true tragedy should these areas of extreme natural beauty be lost forever.
Cuajimoloyas offers several outdoor activities for the eco-tourist to participate in including, guided hikes through stunning woodland with mountaintop views, horse riding, mountain biking, a temazcal and a death slide (Zip line). It also has restaurant and accommodation facilities (including camping), it is even possible to rent a sleeping bag.
Cuajimoloyas is Rainforest Alliance and Ecoturismo certified.
To get to Cuajimoloyas you can either go through Teotitlán and then through Benito Júarez on the dirt road that goes past Teotitlán’s reservoir, or (and at the time of writing (2014) the best route as the road had just been repaved) head to Tlacolula and hang a left, and then head straight up.
If you don’t have a car then you can either take a tour or go via bus or colectivo that leave from Tlacolula (Some also go from the second class bus station in Oaxaca City).
