San José el Mogote Archaeological Site Oaxaca Mexico

San José el Mogote – Etla, Oaxaca

San José el Mogote is small archaeological site near Etla about half an hours drive from Oaxaca City. San José el Mogote is a very old site and precedes Monte Álban by many centuries. It is suggested that at some point it held around half the population of the Valles Centrales. San José el Mogote possibly existed from as early as 1500 BC before being abandoned around 400BC and during that time San José el Mogote grew from being a settled agricultural population to having political wieldings that controlled the rest of the valley as well. As San José el Mogote’s grew monuments and palaces were also constructed top reflect this new centre of power until being supplanted in importance by Monte Álban leading to its eventual abandonment. San José el Mogote was evidently re-inhabited before the arrival of the Spanish in the sixteenth century.

We recommend getting a guide when you visit San José el Mogote as you get a much more animated, understandable idea of what is what than reading about it and trying to figure it out for yourself.
