Yagul Archaeological Site – Oaxaca

Yagul Archaeological Site Oaxaca Mexico

Yagul – Tlacolula, Oaxaca

Yagul is a splendid set of ruins just outside Tlacolula that houses the largest, most important ball game court in Oaxaca. Yagul was occupied from around 500 BC till the 1520’s whereupon yagul’s residents were forced out by the Spanish conquistadores and settled nearby, in what is now Tlacolula. Yagul consists of three main sections; a residential area, a ceremonial area, and a fortress from which it is possible to get a good view of the Yagul ruins and the valley. The ceremonial area houses the ball game court, the palace, the patios, and other structures.
We recommend getting a guide when you visit Yagul as you get a much more animated, understandable idea of what is what than reading about it and trying to figure it out for yourself. Should you want to do some background reading however, follow this link for further information about Yagul.
