Zaachila – Zaachila, Oaxaca
The Zaachila ruins are located in the village of the same name about thirty minutes drive from Oaxaca City. A large portion of the Zaachila ruins are unexplored due to many of them being underneath peoples residences. Zaachila was in use between the 1100’s up until the arrival of the Spanish in 1521, and was the last Zapotec capital in Oaxaca; though Zaachila did fall under Mixtec control at some point before the Spanish arrived. There are two tombs that have been discovered at Zaachila with interesting Mixtec style symbols.
We recommend getting a guide when you visit Zaachila as you get a much more animated, understandable idea of what is what than reading about it and trying to figure it out for yourself. Should you want to do some background reading however, follow this link for further information about Zaachila.
