Company of Jesus Church – Oaxaca City
The Company of Jesus Church in Oaxaca is an ill-fated sixteenth century church that is located between the zócalo and the 20th of November market. The church was originally built in 1579, but due to a particularly fierce earthquake The Company of Jesus Church fell down in 1603, then again in 1604, and yet again in 1607. It underwent restoration in 1665 but was badly damaged again in 1711. In the 19th century the Church was abandoned for about thirty years and parts of the grounds sold off to private buyers leaving just the church. In 1933 the Company of Jesus church and the buildings that were originally part of its grounds were declared a historic monument. Inside The Company of Jesus church is a statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
