Escuela de Bellas Artes Church – Oaxaca City
The original San José (now La Escuela de Bellas Artes) church was built between 1588 and 1594 but was abandoned for many years after a huge earthquake in 1616 left it in considerable disrepair. The San José (now La Escuela de Bellas Artes) church was rebuilt only to be totally destroyed again in 1696 by another earthquake. The San José (now La Escuela de Bellas Artes) church was rebuilt again in 1720 this time with a convent as well to house the Spanish nuns of the Capuchin congregation, and this is the building that we now see standing in Oaxaca City. During the Mexican revolution San José (now La Escuela de Bellas Artes) church was used as a blood bank, and as an old people’s home. In 1947 San José church was restored and became La Escuela de Bellas Artes (School of Fine Arts) which is a building that is principally baroque in style.
Why not visit La Escuela de Bellas Artes, La Soledad, La Plaza de la Danza and get a nieve all in one trip as they are all next to each other?
