Ex-convent of Cuilapam de Guerrero – Cuilapam de Guerrero, Oaxaca
Cuilapam de Guerrero is home to an ex-convent with a difference, it has no roof! The ex-convent of Cuilapam is located in the small village of Cuilapam de Guerrero about 30 minutes’ drive from Oaxaca City. The ex-convent is set in large peaceful grounds just of the main road that runs through Cuilapam, and it is possible to walk out onto the roof. The actual church of cuilapam’s ex-convent is relatively small, but the convent section and the roofless open chapel part of the complex are reasonably large. It is possible to walk around Cuilapam’s cloisters (there is an entrance fee), where there are a number of fresco paintings dating from the sixteenth century.
Of particular note is the statue of the revolutionary Mexican independence leader General Vincente Guerrero that commemorates the place where he was shot dead by firing squad. Vincente Guerrero was held prisoner in Cuilapam’s cloisters for a time before being executed on Valentine’s Day in 1831. There is an oil painting of him in the capitulatory room of the cloisters.
