San Jerónimo Tlacochahuaya Church – Near Oaxaca
The San Jerónimo Church at Tlacochahuaya is a simple yet ornate little church that dates from the 16th century; it was built in 1586 by an indigenous labour force that left traces of their own influences in both the architecture and the decoration. The church at Tlacochahuaya, although of Dominican origin is slightly odd because the Dominicans didn’t impose the common design for that period. This wonderful little 16th century church at Tlacochahuaya is also home to an organ that dates from 1739. The organ is ornately decorated, has a retractable keyboard and is powered by hand operated bellows, but what is most outstanding is that it is still used for routine church services. The 16th century church at Tlacochuahauya also has a fantastic painted ceiling, and some of the walls still bear their original paint. If you are passing Tlacochahuaya it is a very worthwhile stop.
