Santísima Trinidad de las Huertas Church

The Santísima Trinidad de las Huertas Church (The Trinity of the Orchards Church) normally referred to as simply La Trinidad was built in the late seventeenth century but its roots of its construction can be traced back much further. When the City of Oaxaca was constructed using Mixtec and Zapotec labour, the majority of the workers desided to take up residence outside of the City as the City Council distributed plots for free, they didn’t pay taxes, and there were even financial incentives for settling there which gave rise to ‘Santisima Trinidad’ (Hold Trinity). The Santísima Trinidad de las Huertas Church gets the ‘de las huertas’ (of the orchards) part of its name from the agricultural and horticultural activities that these settles began to realize there. The settlement became known as ‘Trinidad de las Huertas’ and thus was named the Trinidad church upon its construction. The unassuming little Trinidad church is also the birthplace of the curious ‘night of the radishes’ festival which is celebrated every 23rd of December in Oaxaca.
