Mazunte Beach – Puerto Ángel, Oaxaca
Mazunte is a beautiful large beach near to Puerto Ángel that is famous because of the Marine Turtles that go there every year to lay their eggs. Historically Mazunte’s inhabitants exploited the turtles for their meat and eggs, but since turtle hunting was outlawed in 1990 Mazunte has become a centre of sustainable development and actively protects the turtles; as before the economy of Mazunte is very dependent on turtles but now the inhabitants make money from tourists who come to see them rather than killing them. Mazunte is the location of the Living Museum of the Marine Turtle (Museo Vivo de la Tortuga Marina). Mazunte has pristine white sand and calm clear blue waters and is almost divided by a rocky outcrop towards one end of the beach, which gives it the impression of being two separate beaches. Mazunte is located around half an hours drive from Puerto Ángel.
