Apoala Cave – Oaxaca
The cave at Apoala is known as ‘Snake Cave’ ( cueva de la culebra) and has been since the Mixtecs ruled the area. The Apoala cave consists of two large caverns of about 40 meters in height. One of the Apoala canaverns also houses a large underground lake which is believed to be fed by the Tamazulapan spring. In these caverns it is also possible to see the ‘Archbishop’s Stone’, which is a stalagmite which has taken the form of a Bishop’s Mitre.
Apoala Cave itself is located near the village of Santiago Apoala, which is about two and a half hours drive from Oaxaca City. If you are going to visit the cave it is advisable to get a guide from Apoala village.
