Sótano de San Agustín Cave – Oaxaca

The Sótano de San Agustín cave (Saint Agustin’s Basement) in Huautla de Jiménez is one of the deepest cave systems in the world second only to caves in Spain and France, the Sótano de San Agustín cave with a depth of 1250 meters is also the deepest in America and one of the longest with a total length of just under 15 miles. The first time that the Sótano de San Agustín cave was explored was in 1970 and in 1980 it was discovered that the Sótano de San Agustín cave joins with the Li Nita cavern. The Sótano de San Agustín cave is suitable only for professional speleologists due to the complete darkness, oxygen issues, the quantity of steams and waterfalls within the cave system, and of course the inherent equipment needs that these problems create. If you want to visit the Sótano de San Agustín cave, Huautla de Jiménez is located about 5 hours drive from Oaxaca City.
