Capulálpam in Oaxaca's Sierra Norte is known as the 'magic village'

Capulálpam – Sierra Norte, Oaxaca

Capulálpam de Méndez or the Pueblo Mágico (Magic Village) is located high in the mountains of the Sierra Norte, and is probably one of the prettiest villages in Oaxaca. The local market has recently received a refurbishment (2013) and is very picturesque and from here there is a spectacular view of the valley. There is also a pretty church and behind that a peaceful square in front of the council building.

Capulálpam has accommodation in the form of cabañas (log cabins) and camping, and offers guided hikes during which you can observe the diverse flora and fauna that the cloud forest has to offer. At Capulálpam you can also do some mountain biking, abseiling (rappelling), cross a hanging bridge over a stream, and if you are brave enough try the death slide (zip line). There is a small cave that you can explore and a temazcal to unwind afterwards. There are a few places to eat, including one by the stream serving its own farmed trout, and another near the market with an exhibition of old photos and collectables that document the history of the village.

To get to Capulálpam from Oaxaca City turn left at the hang a left at the Benito Júarez monument (Monumento), and continue straight on for about two hours passing through Ixtlán on the way. If you don’t have a car consider taking a tour or take a bus from the Central de Abastos in Oaxaca City or take a colectivo from the Monumento (You will need to change in Ixtlán).
