La Nevería – Sierra Norte, Oaxaca
The secluded village of La Nevería is a beautiful little village in the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca that makes up part of a conglomerate of villages known as the Pueblos Mancomunados (Jointly Responsible Villages) who are working to assure sustainable logging and supplement their income by providing ecotourism facilities. For anybody who has visited Oaxaca’s Sierra Norte already this is brilliant news, because it would be a true tragedy should these areas of extreme natural beauty be lost forever.
In the past the villagers took advantage of the extreme cold of the winter month to make and sell ice, and it is from here that La Nevería gets its name. Present day La Nevería is a small agricultural village that supplements its economy with sustainable logging and ecotourism. La Nevería offers several activities that its visitors can participate is such as guided hikes on which you can appreciate the diverse local flora and fauna, mountain biking, and a small Ariel assault course with a death slide (zip line). La Nevería also has cabañas (Log Cabins) and camping facilities and a restaurant.
La Nevería is Rainforest Alliance and Ecoturismo certified.
