Ethnobotanical Garden – Oaxaca

Oaxaca’s ethnobotanical garden was born when the Military was ordered to leave Santo Domingo church in 1993; after petitions for the military to vacate the premises on the grounds of cultural preservation were triumphant. In the end after many suggestions of how to use the space behind the church, the proposal to use the space as an Ethnobotanical garden came out in favour.

The concept is to show the interaction of plants and people, and the garden is divided up into ecological and cultural themes and the plants are organised accordingly. The Ethnobotanical gardem tries to show the history of the Oaxacan people’s interaction with plants.

Oaxaca has immense biodiversity and cultural diversity which the Ethnobotanical garden tries to convey, for example it has an area for plants used to make soap, plants used for making dyes, medicinal plants etc.
During the building of the ethnobotanical garden some ruins were uncovered and these have been tactfully included into the garden. Even if gardening isn’t your cup of tea you can’t fail to be impressed by the spectacular displays.
