Enchanted Lagoon of Guelatao – Sierra Norte, Oaxaca
The Enchanted Lagoon of Guelatao is tucked away in the quiet village of Guelatao de Juárez. The lagoon at Guelatao is surrounded by tall trees and lush green grass and some patches of garden which are carefully looked after. The Enchanted Lagoon of Guelatao is an ideal place to just sit down and do nothing for half an hour or maybe have a picnic whilst admiring the attractive mountain woodland in the background.
Guelatao lagoon is probably best known for the role it played in how the 19th century president Benito Juárez came to go from being a poor shepherd boy to probably the most popular president in the history of Mexico. The story is a long one but the part that corresponds to the lagoon is that whilst looking after the family’s sheep there he fell asleep and one got stolen. So fearful of the beating that he would get from his Uncle, he walked all the way to his sister’s residence in Oaxaca; and there begin his fateful ascension to presidency.
At one end of Guelatao’s lagoon is a small plaza with an enormous statue of Benito Juárez, next to the lagoon there is also a smaller statue of Benito Juárez as a child with his sheep, and there are also busts of Benito Juárez and his sister.
