El Tule – Near Oaxaca
The Village of Santa María El Tule is undoubtedly best known for the giant cypress tree better known as árbol del Tulewhich is discussed in more detail in our flora section of the website. El Tule is a village that is about ten minutes’ drive from Oaxaca City and is also very easy to reach via public transport, either by bus or by colectivo. Historically Tule village was an important lime producer but that has all changed now with the focus firmly placed on tourism generated by the Tule tree. Also El Tule used to be a lake with marshland and the name Tule comes from a word in indigenous tongue that translates as ‘bulrush’, this is also no longer the case the lake has long since dried up.
El Tule has many restaurants and shops selling nieves (Traditional Oaxacan Ice Cream), there is also a market selling artisans from the surrounding Oaxacan villages and a local market selling items that you typically find in village markets and several stalls selling antojitos. El Tule also has many shops selling Mezcal and Mezcal creams.
