Zaachila – Near Oaxaca

Zaachila is a small traditional town about half an hour’s drive from Oaxaca City. Zaachila is most noted for its traditional tianguis style market which takes place every Thursday; more detailed information about this market can be found on our ‘Markets’ page. Zaachila is also home to a largely unexplored archaeological site; more details of which can be found on our ‘Archaeological Sites’ page. Historically Zaachila is important because it was the last Zapotec capital after the fall of Monte Álban to the Mixtecs, and home of the last two ruling Zapotec kings, Cosijoeza nad his son Cosijopii.

Zaachila is about half an hours’ drive from Oaxaca City. If you don’t have a car there are plenty of tours that you can take and it is also relatively easy to get there on the bus or in a colectivo.
