Tlacolula Market – Tlacolula, Oaxaca
Tlacolula market is one of the most popular markets for visitors to Oaxaca, and for good reason. Tlacolula is a traditional markettianguis that has been taking place since Zapotec and Mixtec times, probably since the Spanish relocated the inhabitants of yagul if not before. Tlacolula market is present all year round but it is on Sunday when it has its market day (día de plaza). On this day Talcolula undergoes a dramatic transformation as streets are closed and filled with hundreds of colourful stalls selling everything imaginable. On Tlacolula market you will find the products associated with this village like barbacoa, pan de yema bread, and forged iron works as well as much more. Tlacolula market on Sundays is awash with fantastic food, colourful artisans and plants, dried chillies and seeds and pretty much anything else you can imagine. Many people from the surrounding villages come to buy and sell at Tlacolula on Sundays, and many wear traditional dress; though to the untrained eye it might be difficult to tell which village these traditional apparels belong to. If you can you owe it to yourself to visit Tlacolula on a Sunday, it will be an unforgettable experience.
