Zaachila Market – Villa de Zaachila, Oaxaca
Zaachila market is the most traditional of all the tianguis style markets as it is completely open air (the only exception being the barns for the livestock), also there are still vendors who sit on the floor with and outspread cloth displaying their merchandise. Zaachila historically was the Zapotec capital of Oaxaca after Monte Álban fell under control of the Mixtecs, a therefore became a focal point for commerce within the Oaxacan valley. Today Zaachila market remains largely unchanged, vendors and consumers from the surrounding villages come to Zaachila market to do business for all things needed for day to day life. At Zaachila market you will find a vast array of flowers, fruit, vegetables, tools, seeds, dried goods and much more; there is even a thriving livestock market. This fantastic market is worth a visit to experience the sights, sounds and smell of a Zapotec market.
