Puerto Escondido – The Oaxacan Coast
Puerto Escondido on the Oaxacan coast of Oaxaca has grown from a temporary port used for coffee exportation to one of the most important tourist resorts in Oaxaca. Puerto Escondido has several beaches about which you can read more on the beaches page for Puerto Escondido, the most popular with backpackers is Zicatela, which is where the surfers strut their stuff. The main beach is also very popular, especially with families because the waves are gentler; this is also the case for Carrizalillo beach.
The town of Puerto Escondido has a market which is located a few blocks from the main road and sells fresh produce and handicrafts; there are also several supermarkets in Puerto Escondido. On the main strip that runs parallel to the beach (known as the adoquin) you can find many hotels, restaurants, bars and nightclubs, this strip really comes alive in the evening when everyone returns from the beaches and any tours which they might have taken.
Puerto Escondido has much to offer apart from just its beaches, there are nearby lagoons that you can visit, you can go SCUBA diving, try your hand at sports fishing (for which Puerto Escondido hosts several competitions), or perhaps just take a boat tour of the Puerto Escondido area. If you time it right you might even be able to see Puerto Escondido’s carnival in February, see the international surf competition in November.
Puerto Escondido has its own airport from which you can do a parachute jump if you are brave enough, and is located about 6 hours drive from Oaxaca city. If you don’t have a car you can get there by bus (1st and 2nd class) or take a Suburvan minibus.
