Tehuantepec – The Oaxaca Coast
Tehuantepec is the capital City of the Isthmus region of Oaxaca, a region noted for its colourful traditional dresses, ancient customs and powerful loud women. It is also home to the Guiengola ruins located about 12 kilometres outside of Santo Domingo Tehuantepec. Guiengola is a historically important site because it acted as an important Zapotec stronghold and was able to resist an Aztec onslaught in the late 15th century. The traditional dresses of the women of Tehuantepec are considered by many to be the most beautiful of all of the traditional dresses of Oaxaca State. Santo Domingo Tehuantepec is not actually on the coast itself but is slightly inland from Salina Cruz.
