Oaxacan Pottery – The perfect souvenir

Oaxacan pottery is quite varied in form, colour and style, as you can clearly see if you visit the colourful artisan market (Mercado de Artesanias), or even the stalls that sell Mexican ceramics within the local markets. The pottery from the Oaxacan village of San Bartolo comes in either a matt black or a shiny black colour only, but with the most imaginative shapes you will find. In contrast the pottery from the Oaxacan village of atzompa comes in either a simple beige base colour with colourful appendages or simple terracotta designs with shiny green enamel. These are completely different again to pottery from the Oaxacan village of San Marcos Tlapazola whose signature domestic pottery pieces have a deep red colour. This is different again to the pottery found in the small coastal village of Vista Hermosa Tonaltepec.

Other important pottery producing villages are Atzompa and San Marcos Tlapazola which produce very different styles of pottery.
