Forged Iron from Oaxaca
Forging iron has been going on in Oaxaca since the middle of the sixteenth century and as time has passed the forges have concentrated themselves in Juquila, Jamiltepec and tlacolula. The forges mostly produce tools for agricultural and construction purposes and if you visit the market at Tlacolula on a Sunday you will see the ironsmiths selling axe heads and chisels at stalls there. The ironsmiths of Oaxaca are capable of much more however, if you cast your eye around the buildings you will notice doors with ornate ironwork, gates that shout look at me and elaborate decorative door knockers. Unfortunately for you and the skilful ironsmiths it is very unlikely that it will work out cost effective to ship their marvellous creations.
