Hand-Woven Baskets from Oaxaca

The beautiful baskets that are found in Oaxaca’s markets are hand-woven from a bamboo style plant (carrizo), that grows in ditches and creeks all around the Valles Centrales of Oaxaca. Whether the basket is a run of the mill basket designed to be used in the fields or a decorative accessory for taking to the local market when shopping the beginnings are the same.

To make a basket the artisan first peels a lengths of skin from a recently cut, pliable piece of carrizo, these pieces are then woven together to form the skeleton of the basket. Finer pieces of carrizo are then woven round this skeleton to seal the basket. These finer strips of carrizo are made by bashing the pulp out of the carrizo strips between two flat surfaced stones or similar. Once completed, the basket is left to dry whereupon it becomes hard and ridged.

These stunning baskets are made primarily in Santa Cruz Papalutla, Tlacolula de Matamoros, Ocotlán de Morelos and Villa de Etla.
