Woven Palm Leaf – Oaxaca

The brightly coloured palm-woven pieces that can be seen all over the Oaxacan market are part of a pre-Hispanic weaving process. These delightful palm leaf pieces come in a wide array of useful forms along with some not so useful ones which are mainly aimed at the tourist markets as case-sized trinkets and knick-knacks. One of the most traditional palm-woven products is the petate which is a traditional Mexican multi-use sleeping mat.
The process of weaving palm involves cutting the correct species of palm and then drying it for about half a week in the beautiful Mexican sunshine. The palm is then dyed with natural dyes if colour is required; the palm leaf is then woven together.
