Oaxaca Cathedral – Oaxaca City
Oaxaca Cathedral is a must see sight if you visit Oaxaca City, it is right next to the zócalo in the City centre and has a lovely plaza in front of it which is a noted social venue and provides a little tranquillity in the middle of the City. Oaxaca Cathedral dates back to 1535 though it has changed a lot since then due to several modifications, additions, and a major rebuild (1724-1730) after an earthquake in 1714 caused serious damage. The front of Oaxaca Cathedral is an eighteenth century baroque style entrance with two bell towers and is in the same style as the Cathedral In Mexico City and also the Cathedral in Puebla. Oaxaca Cathedral is also home to a large collection of paintings and some of the remains of the Holy Huatulco cross, which were brought to the cathedral from Santa Cruz Bay, Huatulco in 1612. A visit to Oaxaca’s Cathedral is well worthwhile and at night the Cathedral is lit up and looks spectacular.
